Travel In The Movies – Favorite Product Placements

by

Yesterday at the Mumbrella 360 conference there was some talk of product placement in films and it’s ability to influence purchase decisions. I had some serious posts lined up for today, but I figured it’d be more fun to talk about some of the best travel product placements in movies. Why not, right? Keep in mind; these are just some of my favourites. I’m sure there are some really great product...

Mumbrella 360 Twitter Coverage + Panel

by

As luck might have it, I will speaking on a panel at Mumbrella 360 on Wednesday. Why is this lucky, you ask, and what does it have to do with you? As I have for travel industry conferences, I will try to tweet as much interesting info as possible throughout the two days. This should happen under the hashtag #m360 so don’t forget to load that in your Tweetdeck. I have made a couple of maps based...

Video Of Air New Zealand Destroying Baggage (Update – Airport Testing New Terminal)

by

Update: Christchurch Airport have commented on the video via YouTube, saying that these were donated bags to test their new terminal. Still very wasteful. “Hi All I’d hate to say it but this may be an EPIC FAIL. To clarify this isn’t your unclaimed baggage being destroyed. This was luggage that was used to test our integrated terminal baggage system. Approximately 700 bags were...

First Look At GetFlight.com.au

by

Australian entrepreneur Ian Cumming is at it again!  It didn’t take long after selling travel question and answer site “Travellr.com” to World Nomads for a new project to get off the ground (pardon the pun): GetFlight.com.au. GetFlight.com.au is a flight aggregator, displaying rates and redirecting users to airline websites, but works differently from the major players in the Australian market....

Airbnb gets a little more social

by

Airbnb have launched what could be one of the best uses of Facebook open graph I have ever seen. Sounds like I am over-exaggerating? Let me prove it to you. I first heard about Airbnb in What’s Mine Is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption. I thought this sounded like a great idea, but one of the biggest issues Airbnb had to overcome to achieve mainstream success (in my opinion) was the trust...

Don’t get me wrong, we have some great ones, like Travel Tech and No Vacancy, (both put on my Martin Kelly) but we always need more. Well get ready, because there’s a new kid on the block! Sydney will play host to its first WIT. You can read more about it here; the program will focus on...

Andy Rooney is (very) confused about flights

by

Andy Rooney is confused Do we expect too much for too little? Was the golden era really better? So, Andy Rooney is confused. When this video came up in my Twitter stream, (via @CravenTravels) I was pretty excited to watch it. Sometimes I wonder if we (in the travel industry) forget what it’s like to be one of the public. The few opportunities we get to hear what people have to say about our confusing...

Hipmunk to take over the Android world

by

Hipmunk look ready to move to Android Timing (Kind of) coincides with Honeycomb release It looks like metasearch site Hipmunk.com will be expanding their mobile presence in the very near future. Hipmunk have been vigorously advertising their iPhone app via adwords, (I can’t seem to watch a video on YouTube without seeing that chipmunk!) but look to expand their product to Android. If job ads...

Google adds hotel rates to front page via Places

by

Many months ago I wrote a post about Google Places. You know Google places, the search engines content farm built on scraped reviews? Of course you do. Google Places started out as an add-on to Google Maps, one that added hotel price comparison to relevant searches. In the beginning, the hotel prices were somewhat inconspicuous – it felt as if the rates had been purposely de-prioritized by Google....
