Location based augmented reality in action!
Here is an example of a new iPhone 3GS app taking advantage of the augmented reality technology now being introduced.
This demo shows what’s around the traveler on his iPhone screen. Viewing the list of locations, then tapping the augmented reality button and holding the iPhone up the feature starts. It shows that the Metro station is right in front and others further behind it. Turning around 360º displays other stations and interesting locations like a department store in the vicinity.
When the phone is turned down it displays a list of stations. Clicking on one, displays distance and direction to it with an arrow. Lifting the phone up again displays the selected station with a red box, the others remain black.
Selecting the list of attractions, restaurants, taxis stands etc. and then augmented reality brings up those locations. Again with the same process. Distance is updated in real-time as the person walks towards the selected location.
